Getting to Know Stewart Luckman
Green: on the Edge
ARTIST QUESTIONNAIRE:
I was born in Fitchburg Massachusetts and I presently reside in Friday Harbor, Washington. (I have lived and worked in Massachusetts, New York, Minnesota, Michigan, Washington, and Ethiopia, Africa)
Artist Statement:
The Constant Challenge for me is working with an ancient material to create fresh and new contemporary symbols.
Tales of Cascadia, the stone accepted for this show, was a piece that became A Leaf, A Volume, Stories of a Region. This piece was created specifically for this Juried Exhibition.
“Green” is defined through this work as growth and the continual telling of a story. While working with this stone, I was discovering what the stone actually gave back to me as the sculptor. This stone became the ‘sculptors’ challenge’ for me, as with other artists’ accepted pieces became their challenge, as well.
As an artist, I always wish to be ‘fruitful,’ to create, to ‘make work.’
I have exhibited my work in Minnesota, Washington, New York, Michigan, and Illinois in galleries, museums, universities, and public parks. I have permanent work sited by plazas, public buildings, courtyards, and parks in Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Finland, and Washington.
My art training began at Macalester College in Minnesota and continued with an M.A., B.F.A., and an M.F.A. at the University of Minnesota.
Through the years I have received numerous awards, been purchased for collections, accepted for exhibitions, selected for commissions. A few of the collections where my work may be found are: Saint Paul Company, Macalester College, the IBM Company, Bethel University, the University of Minnesota, the TWEED Museum.
PHOTOGRAPH: Glen Larsen has a copy of my photograph that can be used. It was collected for the “Outside the Box - Inside the Museum” Sculpture Show.
