STEWART LUCKMAN SCULPTURE: Stone Circle
September 27th, 2024, to December 2nd, 2024
You are invited to attend the final exhibition of the sculpture he was working on before his passing and the celebratory ending of sculptor Stewart Luckman’s Life. STEWART LUCKMAN SCULPTURE: Stone Circle, Luckman's most recent work, reveals his philosophy about art and study and relates the hand to the mind. These sculptures are the product of his childhood experiences in Ethiopia as the son of a missionary family and are related to the research he continued throughout his life.
After retiring, Luckman moved to San Juan Island in Washington, where he served as Director of the SJIMA Sculpture Park (San Juan Islands Museum of Art). Stewart also worked with his wife Marilyn to establish IMA, the Islands Museum of Art on San Juan Island. Luckman was granted a sabbatical to Pietrasanta, Italy, from his academic position at Bethel University, St. Paul, Minnesota. He shipped a container of marble from the Carrara quarries in Italy to his new San Juan Island studio. He began to fuse his research with the images he recalled of elegant, art nouveau-like termite mounds in the Ethiopian landscape. Thinking with his hands, he manipulated the marble, shaped books and scrolls, and carved trails as if left by termites.
Stewart Luckman understood there are many ways to learn. Art can teach even science by raising curiosity and awareness. His continual study revealed that numerous scholars and engineers in universities worldwide have studied and continue to study the habits of termites and the construction of their large mounds.
A photographic catalog reflecting the artist’s oeuvre and showcasing Luckman's lifetime of artistic work is available: STEWART LUCKMAN SCULPTURE: Flipping, Turning, Pushing. The book's title stems from an interview Luckman did in which he used the phrase “flipping it, turning it, pushing it” to describe his artistic process. This description brilliantly encompasses his manipulation of the artistic idea and his wielding of the artistic medium. The catalog features photographs of his sculptures, compelling essays from professional colleagues, and documents from his extensive career. The catalog can be found at the SJIMA Giftshop or purchased through Amazon @ Stewart Luckman Sculpture: Flipping, Turning, Pushing.
